With a depth of 663 feet or 202 meters in a bay west of Clarence Town in Long Island in the Bahamas is the world’s deepest blue hole and the second largest underwater chamber, Dean’s Blue Hole.
A dreamy and surreal salt water blue hole which is in itself unique, at the surface Dean’s Blue Hole is circular with a diameter measuring 82-115 feet or 25-35 meters. The amazing natural wonder widens into a cavern with a diameter of 330 feet or 100 meters after one descends 66 feet below the surface. You can find that the water at Dean’s Blue Hole is crystalline clear and during good days, visibility can reach up to 115 feet.
The natural wonder in the Bahamas is a free divers’ haven thanks to its close proximity to the shore, beauty, and depth and can be viewed in its entire splendor from the cliffs above. Boasting of a vibrant deep, blue hue in stark contrast to the shallow turquoise lagoon and white sand beach its set in, makes it appear to be magically dreamy. Not as famous for scuba diving compared to other Blue Holes like the Belize Blue Hole or Dahab Blue Hole but Dean’s Blue Hole is best known for free diving. It is touted as the best spot for free diving and has been the location for several competitions, both national and world free diving records. Dean’s Blue Hole is named after the local landowners and there can be observed a constant “sand fall” or small rivulets of sand streaming down into the hole.
There is never any swell or waves inside the hole and you cannot see any coral or marine life inside Dean’s Blue Hole except the hole itself but you can chance upon a stray shark occasionally. Sea water is lucid and unusually calm. You can find that the bottom of the cave is even while its walls are not. Explorers can also notice numerous unexplored side passages for exploration of these sections are very complex due to the great depth.
Experts at Reeldivers and Vertical Blue, who have done dives at the site, report that: “It is enclosed on three sides by a natural rock amphitheater, and on the fourth side, a turquoise lagoon, and powder white beach.”
Travelers who are planning the Dean’s Blue Hole and its surrounding areas can find hotels near the place. Some of which are: Winter Haven, at Lighthouse Point Road, Clarence Town, Harbor Breeze Villas at Lochabar; Stella Maris Resort Club at Ocean View Drive, Stella Maris, Greenwich Creek Lodge at Queen’s Highway, Deadman’s Cay, among others.
Dean’s Blue Hole is one of the top 77 natural wonders of the world, an amazingly gorgeous dive for snorkelers. During the tides massive volume of water is discharging through the mouth of cave, it means that at least some of these cave connections are deep and connected to the sea. Here one can see live young tarpoons (large seafish), occasional fish of other species and turtles.
