India is not known for its liberal views over sexuality. The country imposed a ban over Homosexuality and declared it to be a criminal offence, but shockingly the country’s history is filled with a rich culture that celebrate sex and displayed its erotic desires publicly.
The country turned towards a more conservative approach towards sex under the Mughal and British rule. India is also credited towards having the first sex treatise ever written in the world in the form of Kamasutra. There are several temples spread across the country that publically display erotic scenes carved in stone on their walls.
The Sun Temple in Orissa is covered with nude stone figurines in different sexual poses. Nudity is also very prominent in the ancient temples and religious artifacts found across the country. The famous Sculptures of Heavenly Women in Maharashtra celebrate the beauty of women.
The ancient temple of Khajuraho is considered to be the best example of liberal views of ancient India. The temple was built in 950 and has carvings of nude women all around the structure. The local women visit the temple on a regular basis and set flowers all across the temple to show their devotion.
It is usually a sense of wonder for foreigners visiting the country to see such open depiction of sex in a conservative country like India. Upon closer inspection nearly all the ancient temples in India hold sceneries intricately carved men and women engaged in different types of sexual activities.
