History
Thailand is considered to be the home to one of the oldest civilizations in Asia. The country has a history that dates back to 3000 B.C. The country has a very risk historic background. It has been ruled by kings, seen military dictatorships and finally attained democracy.
From 650-1940 was ruled by different kings and later turned to democracy after a long struggle in 1947. After some peaceful years of democracy, the country was again plunged into the dictatorship which was finally overturned in 1992 with the emergence of a strong democratic government. Since then the country has been on the track of reforms and have established several reforms in the economy, tourism and culture as well.
Culture
Thai culture is greatly influenced by the surrounding neighbors that have exerted a lot of influence over the region. The Thai culture is heavily influenced by India, China, and rest of Southeast Asia. The country’s major population adheres to the Buddhism and derives a lot of cultural practices from China.
Thai art is heavily influenced by Buddhism, most of the contemporary art is influenced by a mixture of Buddhist beliefs and modern artistic techniques. Where the art is influenced by Buddhism the Literature and the language is greatly influenced by the Indian Culture.
Modern Thailand has a mixture of modern and classical music form, but traditionally the music of the region has folky texture to it with heavy reliance over string instruments. Thai architecture is born out of the necessity of living in a hot climate plus the religion influences that encourage a sense of community and partnership within its adherents.
Some of the notable national holidays include Thai New year called Songkran that is celebrated at 13 to 15 April every year. The locals engage in the tradition of water throwing that is reminiscent of the traditional practice of washing Buddha with water. The other notable holiday is National Elephant Day celebrated at March 13 that signifies the importance of elephants in the local culture.
